Dakkhineyyo: A Tribute of Gratitude

“The gift of Dhamma excels all gifts.” – Lord Buddha

Royal Institute International School students – over 300 of them – stepped into the sacred grounds of Jethavanarama Monastery with bare feet and full hearts, ready to take part in something deeply meaningful. The Dakkhineyyo program, a biweekly almsgiving ceremony, brought together 100 monks, anagārikas, anagārikās, novices, and devotees in a beautiful blend of tradition and spirituality.

The event started off with a vibrant procession—led by our prefects and teachers carrying flags and sacred items in front and our students and parents accompanying the monks, shielding them with pearl umbrellas, creating a serene yet powerful atmosphere. It was more than just a walk in the rain; it was a moving display of reverence and unity, with the participation of students and teachers of all religions.

Once the procession reached the main hall, our students, teachers, and parents joined in the alms offering, presenting atapirikara and over 40 boxes of pirikara, offered by all students of Royal Institute, to the monastic community. Surrounded by chanting and calmness, the moment felt timeless—like a bridge between generations, linking the youth with the spiritual wisdom of the Sangha.

This wasn’t just a school event. It was a life lesson in compassion, humanity, and togetherness—etched in the hearts of every student who took part.
