About the exam

Every child who takes a Cambridge English: Young Learners test gets a Cambridge English Certificate .The certificate has a number of shields for each language skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Cambridge English: Key for schools, also known as Key English Test (KET) for schools, is an elementary level qualification for basic, everyday written and spoken English.

 

Age: For the students above 12 years (Grade 6 – 7)

  • Course Duration :  8 Months

  • Exam Fee           : 7000 LKR
  • Class Time         : Saturday & Sunday (9:00am-12:00pm)

Grammar will be taught at all levels in order to improve the above skills.

 

PLACEMENT TEST

All students seeking admission to these courses are required to sit for the placement test which consists of  written and oral tests for all new students.

  1. Elementary :

This course is for those who do not have a basic knowledge of communicating in English. Who can understand simple sentences but can not speak properly or cannot speak at all. They will learn introduction to commonly used vocabulary and a guide to basic conversation.

  1. Preliminary :

This course is designed for those who can speak simple sentences but are unable to speak on different topics. It will also cover simple conversations to give students confidence in using the language.

  1. Intermediate:

At this level students are able to speak on different topics, but can’t use effective language and expressions. The students will learn how to use the language effectively.

  1. Advanced:

This course is intended for those who successfully complete the Intermediate level, obtaining at least a credit pass Students, at the end of course, will be able to use English confidently and fluently.  They will be exposed to a variety of conversational situations and complex structures of the language.

The course will help the students speak, read, and write English correctly, improve their pronunciation and broaden their word base.

Keeping this in mind, Royal Institute has designed a tailor-made course for students from Grade 5 to Grade 10 studying in the National Curriculum. The course will help the students speak, read, and write English correctly, improve their pronunciation and broaden their word base.

 

General Course Content

This course helps the students in following categories

Speaking Practice – Students are encouraged to speak in English by involving them in  practical activities.
Writing Skills – Essays, letters, stories etc.
Reading Skills – Activities are based on different comprehension passages.
Grammar Learning – Practicing various activities based on essential grammar.
Listening Exercises – Pronouncing vowel and consonant letters in words.
Vocabulary building – Various exercises based on homographs and homophones, synonyms and antonyms.

 

HOW TO REGISTER

The admission form can be obtained from the department of English or else you can download it , after filling out the form, it has to be submitted along with the course fee to the Cashier Counter.

 

PLACEMENT TEST

After the registration student is issued a payment receipt which has to be produced at the Placement Test.  This test is consisted of a written paper, to check the proficiency of English Language.  Placement Test is compulsory for all new students.  Based on the marks obtained at the Placement Test, students will be allotted in the following levels

  1. Foundation
  2. Foundation 2
  3. Beginner’s Level 1
  4. Beginner’s Level 2
  5. Level 1
  6. Level 2
  7. Level 3
  8. Level 4
  9. Level 5

YOUR APPLICATION FOR   ENROLLMENT

 N.B.

All students seeking admission to this course are required to sit for the placement test. This is compulsory for all new students.  Please note that the level of the placement test will not be conveyed to candidates individually. They are   expected to come for the class on the scheduled date of commencement, check the level, displayed on the notice board and proceed to the respective classrooms.

It is very important that students attend all the classes without fail to ensure that students get the maximum benefit from the course.

 

This course is consisted of 5 levels

  5. Advanced

 

IMPORTANT NOTICE

  • Students, who get absent for 4 classes, will not be permitted to sit for the final examination.
  • Certificates to be collected within 1 year of the final examination.
  • Institute shall provide only last five years record for reconfirmation of any of its courses.
  • Institute shall not be responsible for maintaining any records beyond last five years.

 

Certificates:

Students who pass the final examination conducted at the end of each level will be awarded the Royal Institute Certificate in “Diploma in English”.

What  each unit in this course contains: 

  1. Reading :

The reading passages used various types of texts adapted from a variety of reading skills, including reading for details, skimming, scanning, and making inferences. Also included are pre-reading and post-reading questions that use the topic of the reading as a spring board to discussions.

  1. Writing :

The writing exercises include practical writing tasks that extend and reinforce the teaching points in the unit and help in developing student’s compositional skills. The Teacher’s Edition demonstrates how to use the models and exercises to focus on the process of writing.

  1. Conversation:

The conversations introduce the new grammar of each cycle in a communicative context and present functional    and conversational expressions.

  1. Grammar Focus:

The new grammar of each unit is presented in color boxes and is followed by controlled and freer communicative practice activities. These freer activities often have students use the grammar in a personal context.

  1. Pronunciation :

These exercised focus on important features of spoken English, including stress, rhythm,   intonation, reductions, and blending.

  1. Listening :

The listening activities develop a wide variety of listening skills, including, listening for gist, listening for details,   and inferring meaning from context. Charts or graphics often accompany these task-based exercises to lend support to students

  1. Fluency Exercises :

These pair, group, whole class, or role-play activities provide more personal practice of the new teaching points   and increase the opportunity for individual student practice.

  1. Word Power :

The word power activities develop students’ vocabulary through a variety of interesting tasks, such as word   maps and collection exercised. Word Power activities are usually followed by oral or written practice that helps students understand how to use the vocabulary in context.

  1. Snapshot :

The snapshots graphically present interesting real-world information that introduces the topic of a unit or cycle, and also develop vocabulary. Follow-up questions encourage discussion of the snapshot material and personalize the topic.

The group activities are pair work, group work, or whole class activities involving information sharing and role playing to encourage real communication.
